Cholinesterase and Alzheimer's Disease

 

Cholinesterase is a harmful chemical that contributes to the damage seen in Alzheimer’s disease.

 

Cholinesterase contributes to brain damage by destroying a chemical that brain cells need to function.

 

Several common prescription medicines used to treat Alzheimer’s (donepezil/Aricept & rivastigmine/Exelon) function by preventing Cholinesterase from damaging brain cells. These types of medicines are called “cholinesterase inhibitors”.

Both Salvia officinalis and Bacopa monnieri are natural cholinesterase inhibitors.
